Ahmedabad is set to undertake a significant expansion of its urban infrastructure after securing approval for a package of water, sewerage and mobility projects valued at ₹2,719 crore. The investment is expected to modernise ageing civic networks, improve public services and strengthen the city’s resilience against rapid urbanisation, while introducing technology-driven management systems designed to enhance operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.
The approved projects include large-scale rehabilitation of sewerage networks across eastern and western Ahmedabad, upgrades to ageing pipelines, an intelligent water management system, an integrated sludge management facility, and a modern public transport management platform with automated fare collection. Together, these initiatives seek to improve essential urban services while supporting more sustainable and efficient city operations. A substantial portion of the investment has been directed towards renewing decades-old sewer infrastructure that has struggled to keep pace with population growth and urban expansion. Engineers expect the Ahmedabad sewer rehabilitation programme to reduce recurring sewer overflows, pipeline leakages and service disruptions that have affected several neighbourhoods. The upgraded network will incorporate digital monitoring technologies capable of providing real-time operational data, allowing civic authorities to detect faults earlier, prioritise maintenance and improve the reliability of wastewater management systems. Equally significant is the city’s decision to integrate resource recovery into its sanitation infrastructure. The proposed sludge management facility will convert sewage sludge into biogas and other forms of renewable energy, reducing waste disposal requirements while supporting circular economy objectives. Urban infrastructure specialists increasingly view such systems as critical to lowering greenhouse gas emissions, reducing operational costs and transforming wastewater from an environmental burden into a valuable resource.
The investment package also extends beyond sanitation. A new intelligent water management system is expected to improve monitoring of water distribution networks, while integrated transit management and automated fare collection systems aim to simplify travel across Ahmedabad’s AMTS, BRTS and Metro services through common ticketing and real-time passenger information. Transport planners believe these digital systems could improve commuter convenience while encouraging greater use of public transport, an important step towards reducing congestion and transport-related emissions. Funding for the projects will combine support from the Union and state governments with financing mobilised through municipal borrowing and other mechanisms, reflecting an evolving model of urban infrastructure financing that shares responsibility across multiple stakeholders.
As Ahmedabad continues to expand as a commercial and industrial centre, experts believe long-term competitiveness will depend not only on new infrastructure but also on resilient civic systems that can adapt to climate pressures, population growth and rising service expectations.
