Ahmedabad Rotary Parking Brings Relief to Ratanpol’s Crowded Roads

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is developing the city’s first modern rotary parking facility near Ratanpol on Relief Road, aiming to create more parking capacity in one of the busiest commercial areas of the historic city centre. The facility is expected to accommodate 12 cars at the same location, according to a report by Divya Bhaskar.

Relief Road is lined with shops and attracts thousands of shoppers each day. The surrounding Kot area also receives a large number of visitors, but available space for vehicles is limited. The resulting pressure on roadside space has made parking a persistent difficulty for traders, customers and other visitors.

The rotary system is being introduced to use a restricted urban footprint more efficiently. Instead of requiring a larger conventional parking area, the system is designed to organise vehicles within a compact structure, allowing multiple cars to be parked at one location near the market area.

The project is intended to improve access for people visiting shops around Ratanpol and Relief Road while reducing the pressure created by vehicles searching for parking. The municipal corporation has presented it as a local traffic-management intervention as well as a parking facility, linking the project to the wider challenge of managing mobility in Ahmedabad’s dense historic core.

The location is significant because the Kot area has a tightly built urban fabric, active commercial streets and high pedestrian and vehicle movement. In such areas, creating additional road space is difficult, making the efficient use of existing land an important part of parking planning. The project therefore focuses on increasing parking availability without requiring a large new open plot.

The report did not provide details of the project’s cost, construction schedule, operating charges or expected completion date. The next public milestone will be the completion and operationalisation of the rotary parking facility near Ratanpol.
