Ahmedabad: Train services between Ahmedabad and Palanpur will face substantial disruption on August 14 as railway authorities undertake a non-interlocking block to commission an upgraded automatic signalling system. The temporary changes will affect multiple passenger services, with several trains cancelled, others diverted and selected station stops withdrawn. The work highlights the operational disruption often required to modernise critical railway infrastructure.
The signalling upgrade is being carried out across the Ambliyasan, Jagudan, Mehsana and Bhandu Motidau section. Western Railway has scheduled the infrastructure work to enable the commissioning of the automatic signalling system, which is intended to improve train movement management and increase operational capacity along the corridor. A total of 10 train services will remain cancelled during the block period. The affected services include several MEMU and DEMU trains operating between Sabarmati, Mehsana, Patan, Viramgam and Abu Road. These services are particularly important for daily commuters travelling between Ahmedabad and towns across north Gujarat. Several other services will face partial cancellations. The Sabarmati–Jodhpur Express will be curtailed between Abu Road and Sabarmati, while the Valsad–Vadnagar Intercity Express will be partially cancelled between Gandhinagar Capital and Vadnagar.
At least eight services will operate through alternative routes, adding another layer of complexity for passengers travelling across Gujarat and towards Rajasthan, northern India and western India. The changes will affect long-distance services connecting destinations including Jaisalmer, Prayagraj, Jodhpur, Chennai Central and Yog Nagari Rishikesh. Two important stops will also be temporarily withdrawn. Siddhpur and Unjha stations will not receive scheduled halts for specified services during the affected period. Passengers travelling from these locations will therefore need to consider alternative services or make additional arrangements. The Ahmedabad Palanpur trains disruption underlines the challenge of carrying out major railway upgrades on heavily used passenger corridors. While temporary cancellations can inconvenience commuters, modern signalling infrastructure is important for improving network safety, regulating train movements and potentially supporting higher service frequencies over the longer term. For the wider Ahmedabad region, the corridor has significance beyond passenger travel.
