The Ahmedabad-New Delhi Rajdhani Express has been cancelled for its 9 October departure as Indian Railways activated a contingency plan ahead of opposition demonstrations and possible road blockades in Delhi on 10 October. The decision is intended to protect passengers and avoid disruptions around New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations.
Train number 12957, the Sabarmati-Ahmedabad to New Delhi Swarn Jayanti Rajdhani Express, is among the trains cancelled from their originating stations. According to the report, trains scheduled to leave their initial stations after 2 pm on 9 October and reach Delhi between 4 am and 2 pm on 10 October are covered by the contingency arrangements.
The decision follows an advisory from the Delhi Traffic Police warning of heavy congestion and possible road closures around New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin stations during the protest period. The railway administration said the preventive measure was taken to avoid a repeat of passenger difficulties during an earlier protest, when about 5,000 passengers reportedly could not reach stations on time and missed their trains because roads were blocked.
The cancellations affect more than the Ahmedabad service. The trains listed as fully cancelled from their originating stations on 9 October include train number 12247 from Bandra Terminus to Hazrat Nizamuddin, train number 12957 from Sabarmati to New Delhi, train number 20155 from Dr Ambedkar Nagar to New Delhi, train number 09309 from Indore to Hazrat Nizamuddin and train number 12415 from Indore to New Delhi.
The disruption highlights how road blockades and traffic restrictions around major railway terminals can affect long-distance rail operations even when the railway line itself remains open. Passengers arriving at Delhi stations often depend on road access for taxis, buses, private vehicles and local connections. A prolonged closure around the terminals can therefore create problems both for arriving passengers and for trains operating to schedule.
The railway administration has advised passengers to check their train status before leaving home and to use the railway helpline or official website for updates. The advisory is particularly relevant for passengers holding tickets on trains scheduled to reach New Delhi or Hazrat Nizamuddin during the 4 am to 2 pm window on 10 October.
The listed cancellations apply to trains departing from their originating stations on 9 October. Passengers have been asked to verify the status of their individual service through official railway channels before beginning their journey.
