Ahmedabad Metro Airport Link Gets ₹859-Crore Civil Contract

Ahmedabad Metro’s airport corridor has moved closer to construction after a ₹859.25-crore civil works contract was awarded for the Phase 2A link between Koteshwar Road and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The approximately six-kilometre route will include four elevated stations, one underground station and a direct connection towards the airport terminals.

The contract was awarded against an estimated cost of ₹879.27 crore, with the successful company quoting 2.28% below the estimate, according to a report by Gujarat Samachar. The civil package covers the construction of the corridor, including the elevated section, underground works, ramp and airport station.

The planned route will have 4.97 km of elevated alignment and 1.01 km of underground construction. The elevated section will extend from the Koteshwar Road end to the ramp leading to the underground portion. The underground section will include a twin cut-and-cover tunnel and an underground station near the airport.

Four elevated stations are planned at Ashram Road, Koteshwar Ancient Temple, Sabarmati River and Sardarnagar. The airport-side section will run underground from Taj Circle towards the airport, where the fifth station will be built. The station is planned to provide access to Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 through staircases, lifts and escalators.

Utility shifting work for the project is reported to be nearly complete. With the civil contract now awarded, construction activity at ground level is expected to begin in the coming days, while the main work is expected to start after Diwali, according to the report.

The airport corridor received approval from the Union Cabinet on 10 June 2026. The estimated total completion cost of the project is ₹2,169.04 crore, including interest during construction. This figure covers the wider project beyond the civil works contract, including the infrastructure required to build and commission the corridor.

The airport link is planned as an extension of the metro system serving Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. Once the corridor becomes operational, the combined operational metro network of the two cities is expected to reach 77.63 km. The new connection will give air passengers an alternative to road-based travel and is also intended to serve airport employees, nearby residents and other travellers.

The project’s design places the airport station underground, unlike most of the route, which will be elevated. That arrangement is intended to take the metro closer to the airport terminals while limiting the elevated structure in the terminal approach area. The final benefits for passengers will depend on the completion of the station access systems and the start of train operations.

The next immediate milestone is the commencement of civil construction following the award of the contract and completion of preparatory utility-shifting work. The project will then have to progress through the elevated viaduct, underground tunnel, five stations and terminal access infrastructure before passenger services can begin.
