Western Railway has extended the operation of the Ahmedabad–Mangaluru Special Train until the end of July, responding to sustained passenger demand on one of western India’s important long-distance rail corridors. The decision is expected to improve travel availability during the peak holiday and seasonal travel period while easing pressure on regular train services.
Under the revised schedule, the weekly special service will continue operating with five additional trips between 3 July and 31 July 2026. Departing Ahmedabad every Friday, the train will connect Gujarat with Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka, serving numerous commercial centres, tourism destinations and residential hubs along India’s western coastline. The Ahmedabad Mangaluru Special Train will halt at major stations including Nadiad, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Vapi, Vasai Road, Panvel, Ratnagiri, Madgaon, Karwar, Udupi and Mangaluru, strengthening regional connectivity across multiple states. The service will offer AC 2-Tier, AC 3-Tier, Sleeper and General Class coaches to accommodate diverse passenger segments. Transport planners note that temporary rail service extensions play an important role in managing seasonal travel demand without requiring permanent timetable changes. Additional capacity can help reduce overcrowding, improve passenger convenience and provide greater flexibility for business travellers, students, migrant workers and tourists.
For Ahmedabad, enhanced long-distance rail connectivity supports the city’s role as a major commercial and industrial centre. Improved links with coastal Karnataka and western India’s economic corridor facilitate not only passenger movement but also stronger cultural, educational and business exchanges between regions. Urban mobility experts also highlight the importance of rail transport in promoting sustainable intercity travel. Compared with private vehicles, long-distance train services offer a more energy-efficient mode of transport, helping reduce road congestion and lowering transport-related emissions when supported by modern railway infrastructure.
Bookings for the extended services are scheduled to open through the railway reservation system from 30 June 2026, enabling passengers to plan travel during the additional operational period. As travel demand continues to rise, periodic service enhancements such as this are expected to remain an important tool for improving network efficiency while supporting more accessible and environmentally sustainable mobility.
