Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad experienced another day of uncomfortable weather as high humidity combined with temperatures above 40°C, increasing heat stress across the city despite forecasts of partly cloudy skies. The conditions underscore the growing challenge of managing urban heat in rapidly expanding metropolitan areas, where rising temperatures and dense built environments continue to affect public health, productivity and energy demand.
According to meteorological observations, humidity levels remained elevated during the morning, reaching around 71 per cent before gradually declining to nearly 40 per cent by evening. While temperatures remained above the seasonal threshold, the combination of heat and moisture made outdoor conditions feel significantly warmer than the recorded air temperature, increasing discomfort for commuters, outdoor workers and vulnerable populations. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast partly cloudy conditions for the following day. However, weather experts indicate that cloud cover alone is unlikely to provide meaningful relief unless accompanied by rainfall, stronger winds or a sustained drop in daytime temperatures. Urban climate specialists note that humidity plays a crucial role in determining how the human body responds to heat. Elevated moisture levels reduce the body’s ability to cool itself through perspiration, increasing the likelihood of heat exhaustion and heat-related illnesses, particularly among children, older adults and people engaged in prolonged outdoor activity.
The recurring Ahmedabad heatwave conditions also highlight broader urban planning challenges. Cities with extensive concrete surfaces, limited tree cover and high-density development often experience the urban heat island effect, where built-up areas retain and radiate more heat than surrounding rural landscapes. As climate change contributes to more frequent and prolonged heat events, municipal authorities are increasingly being encouraged to integrate cooling strategies into long-term urban development. Experts recommend expanding urban forests, preserving open green spaces, increasing reflective building materials and promoting climate-sensitive neighbourhood design to reduce heat accumulation. Water-sensitive urban planning, shaded pedestrian corridors and improved public transport infrastructure are also viewed as essential measures to help residents cope with increasingly extreme summer conditions.
The economic implications are equally significant. Extended periods of heat can reduce labour productivity, increase electricity consumption through higher cooling demand and place additional pressure on healthcare systems. Businesses operating in logistics, construction and manufacturing may also face operational challenges during prolonged heat episodes. Public health authorities continue to advise residents to minimise outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours, remain hydrated and pay particular attention to individuals most vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. Employers are also being encouraged to adopt flexible work schedules where feasible to reduce occupational heat exposure. With seasonal temperatures expected to remain elevated, the Ahmedabad heatwave serves as a reminder that climate resilience increasingly depends on integrating weather preparedness with sustainable urban planning. Long-term investments in green infrastructure, heat action plans and climate-responsive development will be essential to improving the city’s ability to withstand rising temperatures while protecting public health and economic activity.
