Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Marks Major Progress

Ahmedabad: Construction of the Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor has moved beyond the 61 per cent completion mark, signalling continued progress on India’s first high-speed rail project and reinforcing Ahmedabad’s role in the country’s evolving intercity transport network. As engineering work advances across Gujarat and Maharashtra, the corridor is expected to reshape regional connectivity while influencing future urban growth around high-speed rail stations.

Latest government project monitoring data shows that more than ₹90,966 crore has been invested in the 508-kilometre corridor, with substantial progress recorded across major civil and rail infrastructure works. The project remains one of India’s largest transport investments and is being tracked under the Centre’s infrastructure monitoring framework. Construction activity has accelerated across multiple sections of the alignment. Track bed development has advanced significantly, while installation of overhead electrification infrastructure, bridge piers and viaduct girders continues across the route. Work has also progressed on the strategically important under-sea tunnel section in Maharashtra, alongside elevated structures connecting urban and industrial centres. For Ahmedabad, the Ahmedabad Bullet Train project represents more than a reduction in travel time. Urban development experts believe high-speed rail has the potential to strengthen regional economic integration, improve business mobility and encourage transit-oriented development around station precincts. Well-planned station areas can support mixed-use neighbourhoods, commercial activity and better integration with metro systems, buses and other public transport services.

The corridor will connect twelve stations across Gujarat, Maharashtra and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, including Ahmedabad and Sabarmati. These stations are expected to become important mobility hubs capable of supporting economic activity while reducing dependence on private road transport for long-distance travel. Officials have indicated that the project will become operational in phases, with the initial service expected to begin on the Surat–Vapi section before additional stretches are commissioned. Once the full corridor is completed, trains are expected to operate at speeds of up to 320 kmph, reducing travel time between Ahmedabad and Mumbai to under two hours for limited-stop services. Transport economists note that phased commissioning allows operational systems to be tested while enabling earlier economic benefits for cities along completed sections.

However, they emphasise that the long-term success of the corridor will depend on seamless multimodal integration, affordable last-mile connectivity and sustainable land-use planning around stations. As construction progresses towards its next phase, Ahmedabad is expected to play a central role in India’s high-speed rail ambitions. Beyond faster travel, the project presents an opportunity to align modern transport infrastructure with climate-conscious urban planning, supporting lower-emission mobility, regional competitiveness and more resilient city development.
