The spike is placing additional pressure on the city’s urban power infrastructure while raising wider concerns around energy efficiency, climate resilience, and rising carbon emissions in rapidly warming Indian cities.

According to recent utility data, the city’s average daily electricity demand in May has reached nearly 1,468 megawatts, significantly higher than the previous month. Consumption patterns indicate sustained stress during afternoon hours as well as late-night periods, reflecting changing behavioural trends as residents increasingly depend on mechanical cooling to cope with elevated temperatures. Energy experts say the latest rise in Ahmedabad power demand demonstrates how climate-linked heat stress is reshaping urban electricity usage across India. Cooling loads from residential and commercial buildings are emerging as one of the fastest-growing contributors to peak energy demand, particularly in dense metropolitan regions experiencing expanding middle-class housing and increasing appliance penetration. Analysts note that the growing dependence on air-conditioning has created a dual challenge for cities. While access to cooling is becoming essential for public health and productivity during extreme heat events, unchecked consumption also increases pressure on distribution networks, raises household energy costs, and contributes to higher emissions from fossil fuel-based electricity generation.

The increase in night-time electricity usage has drawn particular attention this year. Urban climate researchers attribute the trend partly to the “urban heat island” effect, where dense built-up areas retain heat long after sunset due to concrete surfaces, traffic emissions, and limited green cover. As temperatures remain elevated overnight, residents continue operating cooling systems for longer durations. Officials monitoring the power network reported limited but recurring feeder and transformer tripping incidents during May, although disruption levels remain relatively low compared to the overall network scale. Infrastructure specialists caution that continued summer demand growth may require accelerated upgrades in grid management, transformer capacity, and decentralised renewable energy integration. The situation has also revived conversations around energy-efficient cooling practices. Building sustainability experts argue that temperature settings, appliance efficiency ratings, and passive cooling design can significantly reduce electricity consumption without compromising comfort levels. Studies by energy agencies suggest that modest increases in air-conditioner temperature settings can lead to meaningful reductions in power use and compressor strain.

Urban planners say Ahmedabad’s experience reflects a broader national challenge as Indian cities confront intensifying heatwaves linked to climate change. Demand for cooling is expected to rise further over the next decade, making energy-efficient housing, rooftop solar adoption, urban greening, and climate-responsive building design increasingly important for long-term urban resilience. As summer temperatures continue to test city infrastructure, policymakers may face growing pressure to balance rising cooling needs with cleaner energy transitions and sustainable urban planning strategies that reduce dependence on energy-intensive lifestyles
