The Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway reported robust gains in freight movement, operational efficiency and passenger service delivery during June, reflecting the growing importance of Gujarat’s rail network in supporting industrial supply chains, port connectivity and regional economic activity. The latest operational data also highlights how investments in rail infrastructure continue to strengthen logistics performance across western India.
The division recorded freight transportation of more than 4.4 million tonnes during the month, representing a double-digit increase over the corresponding period last year. Higher movement of commodities such as coal, fertilisers and salt contributed significantly to the growth, underlining sustained demand from manufacturing, agriculture and energy sectors that depend heavily on efficient rail freight services. Freight earnings also registered a substantial rise, demonstrating the increasing commercial importance of rail-based logistics for the region. Industry observers note that Gujarat’s industrial clusters and major ports have continued to generate strong cargo volumes, making rail transport an essential component of multimodal freight movement. A notable milestone was achieved on the Gandhidham–Mundra Port corridor, where the highest-ever monthly movement of double-stack container trains was recorded. The achievement reinforces the strategic role of western India’s freight corridors in handling export-import cargo while improving cargo handling efficiency between inland logistics hubs and maritime gateways.
Operational improvements extended beyond freight movement. Railway data showed better punctuality for mail and express services compared with the previous year, reflecting enhanced network management and improved utilisation of railway assets. Higher deployment of electric locomotives and a sharp increase in long-haul freight train operations further indicate efforts to optimise capacity while improving energy efficiency across the network. The division also marked the commencement of a new freight movement from the Devaliya multimodal terminal, expanding rail connectivity for mixed cargo destined for northeastern India. Logistics experts believe such multimodal terminals are becoming increasingly important in reducing dependence on road transport by integrating rail services with industrial and warehousing infrastructure. Passenger operations also witnessed incremental improvements during the month. Additional coaches were attached to scheduled services to accommodate seasonal travel demand, while extra parcel vans were deployed to strengthen cargo handling within passenger train operations. These measures aim to balance rising passenger volumes with efficient freight movement without compromising service reliability.
Transport economists suggest that sustained improvements in rail freight operations can generate wider economic benefits by reducing logistics costs, lowering carbon emissions and enhancing supply chain resilience. Increased reliance on electrified rail transport also aligns with India’s broader objective of creating cleaner and more sustainable freight corridors. As freight volumes continue to rise alongside expanding industrial activity, the Ahmedabad Division’s latest performance demonstrates how operational efficiency, infrastructure investment and multimodal integration are becoming central to supporting economic growth while improving the resilience of India’s railway network.
