An Ahmedabad Fortuner accident on the Nikol stretch killed a woman and her 15-year-old son and left two others seriously injured after the vehicle mounted a footpath near Akshar Hospital on Monday night, according to the ‘I’ Division Traffic Police statement reported by Divya Bhaskar.
The crash took place at around 9.30 pm near Akshar Hospital and Devsya School, where migrant workers selling traditional garments were resting beside the footpath. Police identified the vehicle as a Toyota Fortuner bearing registration number GJ18EF4060 and named the alleged driver as 36-year-old Viral Savjibhai Chaudhary, a resident of Nana Chiloda.
Police Inspector S.I. Sumra of the ‘I’ Division Traffic Police said four people were injured in the crash. Two of them later died during treatment, while two others remained under medical care. The deceased were identified as Poonamben Jitendrabhai Nagwadia and her 15-year-old son, Sagar Jitendrabhai Nagwadia. The injured were identified as Karthikbhai and an unidentified woman, according to the police statement quoted in the report.
The impact pushed the vehicle onto the footpath and trapped one man between the car’s bonnet and a permanent wall, the report said. Witnesses told the source that people nearby rushed to the site after hearing the collision. The driver was allegedly trying to leave the scene when local residents stopped him and handed him over to the police. Police said the driver was also injured after being assaulted by members of the crowd.
The police said two beer cans were found inside the vehicle. The driver was taken to hospital for medical examination and testing to determine whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol. The allegations regarding intoxication remain subject to the investigation and medical findings.
The case has been registered under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relating to culpable homicide, along with provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, police said. The investigation will determine the circumstances of the crash, the driver’s condition and the sequence of events after the collision.
The report also said that the same vehicle had previously received an electronic speeding challan. Traffic police reportedly recorded the offence on February 26, 2026, when the Fortuner was allegedly travelling at high speed near the Karai cut on S.P. Ring Road. That earlier traffic record is now part of the reported background to the case.
The crash has again brought attention to the vulnerability of people who sleep, work or sell goods along Ahmedabad’s footpaths. In this case, the footpath offered no effective protection from a vehicle leaving the carriageway. Police action and the pending medical examination of the driver are the next immediate steps in the investigation.
