Ahmedabad Food Safety Crackdown Seals Four Farsan Units

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has sealed four farsan and food-product units after inspections found lapses in burnt cooking-oil disposal, hygiene, flooring and food-packet labelling ahead of Diwali. The action comes as the civic body increases checks on food businesses and prepares additional sanitation and health measures for the festive season.

The AMC health and food department sealed Swastik Foods and Shyam Sundar Food Product at Maheshwari Estate on Dudheshwar Road in Shahibaug, along with Prakashkumar Kanaiyalal and Amratlal Kuberdas Namkeenwala on Gandhi Road.

At Swastik Foods, officials found no arrangements for disposing of burnt edible oil generated during frying. The unit also did not have an agreement with an authorised disposal agency, according to the inspection findings reported by the Times of India. Officials additionally noted improper flooring and said workers involved in food production were not following personal hygiene norms.

Shyam Sundar Food Product was sealed over violations involving food-packet labelling, the disposal of used burnt oil and general hygiene conditions. The two units on Gandhi Road were also found to have unsanitary conditions and inadequate systems for disposing of used cooking oil.

The findings point to multiple compliance responsibilities for food-production units operating in the city. Used oil must be managed through an appropriate disposal arrangement, while premises used for food preparation require hygienic working conditions. Labelling failures can also affect the information available to consumers buying packaged food products during a period of increased demand.

The enforcement action was taken as the AMC health and solid waste management committee reviewed preparations for Diwali during its Friday meeting. The committee directed officials to arrange cleaning and garbage collection twice a day during the festival, keep urban health centres operational and ensure emergency medical services for citizens.

The committee also asked civic officials to increase the collection of samples of sweets and farsan from across Ahmedabad during the festive season. The sampling drive will operate alongside inspections of food-making units, with the stated focus on identifying violations before and during the period of higher festive consumption.

The AMC’s directions link food safety enforcement with the city’s broader festival operations. Increased production of sweets and farsan creates a parallel requirement for more frequent waste collection, functioning health facilities and emergency response capacity. The civic body has not disclosed in the supplied report how long the four units will remain sealed or what corrective steps will be required before reopening.
