Ahmedabad Flyover Faces Demolition After Structural Failures

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has initiated a ₹51.70 crore tender for the complete demolition and reconstruction of the Hatkeshwar flyover, originally built in 2017 at a cost of ₹50.88 crore.

This decision follows multiple structural failures and expert assessments deeming the bridge unsafe for public use. The flyover, intended to serve for 50 years, began showing significant structural issues within four years of its inauguration. Reports from IIT Roorkee and SVNIT Surat highlighted the use of substandard materials, including concrete with dangerously low compressive strength and poor water-cement ratios. These deficiencies led to visible cracks, sagging, and ultimately, the closure of the bridge in 2022.

Investigations revealed a lack of proper quality control measures during construction. Notably, no load tests were conducted before the bridge was opened to traffic, and essential records of concrete testing were absent. The AMC filed an FIR against officials from the construction firm Ajay Engi-Infrastructure Pvt Ltd and the project management consultant SGS India Pvt Ltd, citing criminal conspiracy and fraud Despite multiple attempts to initiate the demolition and reconstruction process, previous tenders failed to attract bidders. One bid received was significantly higher than the estimated cost, leading to further delays. The AMC has now reissued the tender, focusing solely on demolition, with plans to address reconstruction separately.

The situation has drawn criticism from opposition parties, questioning the increased budget and the lack of transparency in the process. Concerns have also been raised about the inconvenience faced by commuters due to the prolonged closure of the bridge. The AMC’s actions underscore the need for stringent quality control and accountability in public infrastructure projects. The Hatkeshwar flyover case serves as a cautionary tale, emphasizing the importance of sustainable and safe urban development practices.
