A citywide fire safety enforcement campaign has intensified across Ahmedabad after authorities inspected hotels, educational institutions and coaching centres for compliance with mandatory fire protection regulations. The exercise resulted in hundreds of compliance notices and the sealing of multiple establishments, highlighting the city’s renewed focus on strengthening public safety standards in high-footfall buildings.
The latest inspection drive by Ahmedabad’s fire authorities covered hospitality establishments alongside schools, coaching centres and other educational facilities spread across multiple administrative zones. Officials issued 216 notices, including 154 to hotels and 62 to educational and coaching institutions, while 13 hotels and one coaching institute were sealed after inspectors identified serious deficiencies in fire safety compliance. The Ahmedabad Fire Safety Drive recorded the highest volume of enforcement action in the western parts of the city, where a significant number of commercial establishments received notices and several properties faced immediate closure. Similar inspections were carried out across the central, eastern, northern, southern and north-western zones, reflecting a citywide approach rather than isolated enforcement. Urban safety experts say such inspections have become increasingly important as Ahmedabad continues to witness growth in hospitality, commercial activity and private educational infrastructure. Buildings accommodating large numbers of visitors require regular verification of emergency exits, firefighting equipment, evacuation routes and other life-safety systems to minimise risks during emergencies.
Authorities have indicated that enforcement will not be limited to one-time inspections. Instead, periodic audits are expected to continue, with establishments required to rectify deficiencies within prescribed timelines or face further regulatory action. Officials maintain that compliance is essential not only to satisfy statutory requirements but also to protect occupants, employees and emergency responders. The Ahmedabad Fire Safety Drive also reflects a broader shift towards integrating public safety into urban development. As cities become denser and mixed-use developments expand, ensuring that commercial buildings comply with updated fire norms has become a critical component of sustainable urban governance.
