The Union Cabinet has cleared a major rail infrastructure project connecting Ahmedabad with Dholera, marking a significant step towards strengthening regional mobility and supporting the next phase of industrial and urban development in Gujarat. The proposed double-line corridor, estimated to cost around ₹20,667 crore, is expected to improve passenger and freight movement while enhancing connectivity to one of India’s largest planned economic regions.
The Ahmedabad Dholera rail project will establish a semi-high-speed rail corridor extending approximately 134 kilometres between Sarkhej and Dholera. Designed to integrate with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the line is intended to improve multimodal transport by linking Ahmedabad with the Dholera Special Investment Region, the upcoming international airport and the National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal. Urban development experts believe the project has the potential to reshape travel patterns across southern Gujarat by reducing journey times and strengthening connections between industrial zones, logistics facilities and residential areas. Faster regional rail services can also encourage balanced urban expansion by improving accessibility to emerging employment centres beyond Ahmedabad’s existing metropolitan limits. The corridor is expected to benefit hundreds of villages located along the alignment while expanding access to education, healthcare, employment and commercial opportunities. Improved regional mobility may also support planned urbanisation in Dholera by making the investment region more closely connected with Gujarat’s largest economic centre.
Transport economists note that dedicated semi-high-speed rail infrastructure can improve logistics efficiency by reducing pressure on highways and providing more reliable connectivity for both passengers and businesses. Better integration between rail, road and airport infrastructure is increasingly viewed as essential for supporting industrial growth and strengthening supply chains across rapidly developing regions. The Ahmedabad Dholera rail project also aligns with broader efforts to encourage lower-carbon transport systems. Rail-based mobility generally produces lower emissions per passenger and freight movement than equivalent road transport, particularly when integrated with electrified operations. If accompanied by sustainable station planning and transit-oriented development, the corridor could contribute to reducing congestion and improving long-term environmental outcomes. Infrastructure specialists emphasise that the project’s wider impact will depend on coordinated land-use planning, last-mile connectivity and balanced urban development around future stations.
