Ahmedabad Canal Redevelopment Gets ₹1,003 Crore Boost
The Gujarat government has approved ₹1,003 crore for Phase-2 of the Kharikat Canal Redevelopment Project. This redevelopment, spearheaded by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), aims to address pollution, enhance connectivity, and provide better urban amenities across the canal’s stretches. The project will span five key stretches along the Kharikat Canal, with construction set to take place from S.P. Ring Road to Naroda Crematorium, Vinzol Vahela to Ghodasar, and Vatva Village to S.P. Ring Road, among others.
The redevelopment includes the construction of RCC stormwater box structures, roads, footpaths, sewer systems, and water pipelines, all designed to improve drainage, connectivity, and overall urban functionality. The Kharikat Canal, a crucial part of the city’s irrigation infrastructure, has long been plagued by increasing pollution due to the unregulated dumping of waste along its banks. This pollution has become a pressing concern for public health, especially with the growing urbanisation around the canal.
With Phase-2, the AMC aims to bring significant improvements to the canal, extending the redevelopment work to the remaining open stretches and addressing the connectivity issues faced by residents of the town planning areas (TP) on both sides.
While Phase-1 of the project has already seen 80% completion, covering a 12.75-km stretch, the focus now shifts to the remaining parts. The Gujarat government had previously allocated ₹1,338 crore for Phase-1, and with the addition of ₹1,003 crore for Phase-2, the AMC is confident that the project will further improve urban life for Ahmedabad’s residents. The redevelopment also aims to revitalise the canal as a public space, making it a cleaner, safer, and more accessible area. This move aligns with the larger goals of sustainable urban development and improved public infrastructure in rapidly expanding cities like Ahmedabad.
