Ahmedabad’s bus network faced temporary changes on August 12 as a Tiranga Yatra moved through the Raipur Darwaja–Sarangpur Darwaja corridor, highlighting the delicate balance between public events and everyday mobility in a city increasingly dependent on mass transit. Nineteen AMTS routes were shortened and 38 diverted, while five BRTS services were curtailed during the traffic restrictions.
The measures began from 2pm and remained in force until the procession ended. On the BRTS network, services serving the affected corridor were cut back to alternative stopping points, while five stations or cabins around Kalupur, Sarangpur and Raipur were closed temporarily. For passengers, the disruption was more than a route-planning issue. When a bus terminates before its normal destination, the burden shifts to walking, changing services or finding another mode. That can have a disproportionate effect on older passengers, people with disabilities, workers travelling fixed shifts and families making multi-stop journeys. The timing also matters because Ahmedabad’s public transport system is carrying a substantial daily load. AMTS recorded 631,761 passenger journeys in a single day this week, generating about ₹39.77 lakh in revenue, according to reports citing the transport service.
That ridership figure puts the disruption in perspective. Even a temporary diversion can affect a large number of trips when a network operates at this scale. It also underlines why event-related traffic plans need to be communicated early, with clear alternative routes and real-time information rather than relying solely on commuters to adjust after reaching a closed corridor.Urban transport planners say planned road closures are sometimes unavoidable for large public gatherings. The more important question is whether the surrounding transport system has enough resilience to absorb them. Coordinated bus diversions, temporary interchange points and pedestrian-safe connections can reduce the knock-on effects without encouraging a shift towards private vehicles.
This is particularly relevant for Ahmedabad’s climate and mobility goals. Public transport can carry large numbers of people with less road space per passenger than individual cars, but that advantage depends on reliability. Repeated uncertainty around routes can make private vehicles appear more convenient, adding congestion and emissions to already busy streets. The city’s recent ridership performance suggests there is strong demand for affordable bus travel. Maintaining that confidence will require transport agencies to treat service information, accessibility and continuity as part of core infrastructure rather than secondary operational details. The immediate procession has passed, but the lesson extends beyond a single day. As Ahmedabad hosts more large-scale public events while its population and travel demand grow, temporary traffic management will need to protect the reliability of the public transport network as carefully as it manages vehicle movement
