Families of those who lost their lives in the Ahmedabad air crash have renewed calls for greater transparency in the ongoing accident investigation, urging authorities to provide access to key flight recorder information while also seeking a permanent public memorial at the crash site. The demands have intensified as the official inquiry continues, reflecting broader concerns over public trust, accountability and support for affected communities following one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters.
The latest appeal emerged during a meeting of bereaved families after India’s aircraft accident investigation authority reiterated before the Supreme Court that sensitive evidence, including cockpit voice recordings and flight recorder data, would remain confidential until the investigation reaches its conclusion. Officials have maintained that restricting access to such material is consistent with international aviation investigation practices aimed at protecting the integrity of the inquiry. The crash occurred shortly after an international flight departed from Ahmedabad for London on 12 June, when the aircraft went down within seconds of take-off near the BJ Medical College campus. The accident claimed the lives of nearly everyone on board while also causing fatalities on the ground, triggering one of the country’s most extensive civil aviation investigations in recent years. The families argue that greater clarity during the investigation process would help address unanswered questions surrounding the circumstances of the accident. Legal representatives associated with several affected families have sought wider access to technical evidence, contending that timely disclosure could improve confidence in the inquiry without waiting for the publication of the final findings.
Investigation authorities, however, have maintained that witness statements, cockpit voice recordings, air traffic control communications, medical records and other sensitive technical material must remain protected until the inquiry is completed. Aviation safety experts note that confidentiality provisions are widely followed during accident investigations to prevent misinterpretation of incomplete evidence and to ensure independent technical analysis before official conclusions are reached. According to submissions made before the Supreme Court, the investigation agency expects to prepare its draft final report by October. Alongside demands for greater transparency, families have reiterated their request for a permanent memorial at the crash site.
