In response to escalating water consumption, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has undertaken proactive measures to bolster its water supply infrastructure.
According to a recent report from the civic body’s water supply department, the city’s per capita water supply has witnessed a significant surge, climbing from 132 litres per capita per day (lpcd) in 2009-10 to a range of 150 to 160 lpcd in 2022. This surpasses the national benchmark of 135 lpcd set for urban areas. The report highlights a notable uptick in the city’s daily water consumption by 54 million litres per day (MLD), with an anticipated additional increase of 100 MLD expected as temperatures soar during the impending summer months. To address this mounting demand, AMC is fortifying its water supply framework through strategic interventions.
One such initiative involves augmenting raw water procurement, with the AMC procuring raw Narmada water at a rate of Rs 4.50, resulting in an annual expenditure of approximately Rs 225 crore paid to the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL). The augmentation plan encompasses the establishment of new pumping stations and the enhancement of existing infrastructure to streamline water distribution and ensure efficient allocation to meet the burgeoning needs of the city’s expanding populace This proactive stance by the AMC underscores its commitment to sustainable urban development and the provision of essential services amidst a rapidly evolving demographic landscape. With these measures in place, Ahmedabad is poised to navigate the challenges of escalating water demand while fostering resilience in its water supply system.
