Bala Sahib Hospital in Delhi will soon begin offering chemotherapy to cancer patients at about half the prevailing market rate, according to an announcement by Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Harmeet Singh Kalka. The proposed service is intended to expand access to lower-cost cancer treatment through the hospital.
Kalka announced the plan while addressing the congregation during an event marking the Prakash Parv of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. He said the chemotherapy facility would be introduced at Bala Sahib Hospital shortly and would be available at rates significantly below those charged in the market.
The announcement identifies affordability as the central feature of the proposed service, but the DSGMC report does not specify the exact charges, the types of chemotherapy that will be offered, the number of patients the hospital will be able to treat or the date on which bookings will begin. Details about the medical team, drug procurement and treatment protocols have also not been provided.
Bala Sahib Hospital is among the healthcare facilities through which the DSGMC provides medical services. Kalka also referred to affordable healthcare services being made available by the committee at the gurdwara complex at Bangla Sahib and at Bala Sahib Hospital. The new oncology service would add chemotherapy to the hospital’s reported healthcare offering.
Chemotherapy costs can vary depending on the medicine prescribed, the treatment cycle, diagnostic requirements and the patient’s clinical condition. As the announcement only states that the proposed facility will operate at half the market rate, the final financial benefit to patients will become clear once the hospital publishes its fee schedule and treatment details.
The programme was announced alongside several measures for DSGMC employees. Kalka declared a 15 per cent increase in dearness allowance and free life insurance and medical insurance facilities for committee staff. He also said that around 90 staff quarters at the Gurudwara Mata Sundari Ji complex were nearly ready.
The public event was held at Gurdwara Moti Bagh Sahib, with DSGMC general secretary Jagdeep Singh Kahlon and religious affairs head Jaspreet Singh Karmasar also addressing the congregation. The report does not indicate whether the proposed chemotherapy service has received any separate regulatory clearance or identify the next operational milestone.
The hospital’s announcement of a start date, treatment schedule, eligibility conditions and price list will determine when patients can begin using the service and how its promised affordability will be measured.
