Adani Ports Develops 1.1 km Steel Slag Road at Hazira for Sustainability

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has taken a pioneering step in sustainable infrastructure by constructing the world’s first steel slag road within a private port. The 1.1-kilometre stretch at Hazira Port in Gujarat, connecting the Multi-Purpose Berth to the coal yard, showcases a significant move towards circular economy principles in India’s logistics sector.

The road is constructed using processed steel slag, a by-product from steel manufacturing, repurposed into high-performance road aggregates. This initiative represents a scalable model for converting industrial waste into infrastructure solutions. Developed as part of the Phase II expansion of Hazira’s Bulk and General Cargo Terminal, the road has been designed in collaboration with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research–Central Road Research Institute (CSIR–CRRI) and supported by the Union Ministry of Science & Technology. The road’s flexible pavement design is optimised to handle heavy cargo traffic while enhancing its longevity and structural resilience. According to infrastructure experts involved in the project, the application of steel slag significantly reduces both the construction cost and carbon emissions compared to conventional materials, reinforcing APSEZ’s commitment to sustainable development.

This project aligns with the national “Waste to Wealth” mission and reflects India’s growing emphasis on environmentally conscious infrastructure. While the country has previously piloted two steel slag roads—one each in Surat and Vadodara—Hazira Port now stands as the first global instance of deploying this green technology within a maritime terminal. Officials overseeing the project have affirmed that this approach could be replicated across India’s major ports and logistics corridors to boost sustainability goals. With India’s ports sector expanding rapidly to support industrial and export growth, such eco-innovations could form a core component of future logistics infrastructure. The road was officially launched at Hazira Port by top representatives from national science agencies and industry bodies. In addition to showcasing India’s scientific prowess, the initiative has also underlined the port operator’s strategic commitment to low-carbon growth, industrial ecology, and long-term asset sustainability.

As India pursues its climate goals under global frameworks and internal policy targets, Hazira’s green road marks a critical convergence of industry, science, and environmental stewardship. It further strengthens the narrative that innovation in infrastructure can play a pivotal role in shaping a greener, more resilient economy without compromising performance or scalability.
