Following a tragic fatality involving a young professional, the Noida Authority has launched an urgent safety audit across the city, identifying 65 high-risk zones where construction practices and urban infrastructure pose threats to the public. The initiative seeks to enforce safety standards on both private development sites and municipal roadways, highlighting the intersection of urban planning, public safety, and real estate accountability.
The assessment, carried out jointly by the authority’s civil department and traffic officials, focused on waterlogged plots, exposed basements, and unsecured construction areas near busy streets. Officials emphasised that a majority of the hazardous locations are linked to private developers. Identified sites were found lacking essential safety measures such as barricades, reflective signage, road delineation, and basic protective infrastructure. Notices have been issued to developers, requiring corrective measures within three to five days, with heavy penalties threatened for non-compliance. At sites managed directly by the municipal authority, remedial works will include guardrails, lane markings, street lighting, and updated road signage. A broader citywide drainage survey is also underway to identify flood-prone areas, overflow zones, and chronic waterlogging hotspots, particularly in 20 villages surrounding Noida.
Twenty projects have already received approval for drainage improvements, while others are in various stages of planning. Officials noted that stagnant water has been a recurring contributor to accidents, vehicle skidding, and urban hazards, underscoring the importance of integrated infrastructure planning. Several stretches of concern illustrate the risks vividly. On Shivalik Marg near the Sector 32 Metro station, deep excavation pits of 80-100 feet have remained unprotected for years, with collapsed barricades and scattered construction debris creating a night-time hazard. Similar conditions are reported near the Janpath Marg roundabout and in Sector 150 near Tata Eureka Park, where abandoned projects and poorly maintained plots have led to waterlogging, sewage accumulation, and obstructed sightlines. Urban planners highlight that such neglected sites reflect systemic lapses in project monitoring, enforcement of municipal codes, and coordination between developers and civic authorities. Experts argue that this enforcement drive represents a turning point for Noida’s urban governance.
By mandating immediate safety compliance and integrating infrastructure upgrades such as drainage reinforcement, the city is attempting to prevent reactive, post-incident interventions and shift toward proactive, people-centric planning. If implemented effectively, these measures could not only reduce accidents but also enhance public confidence in urban development practices, ensuring that growth and safety advance in tandem.
