Bengaluru Launches Ultra Pure Water Supply For Peenya

Bengaluru is set to pioneer industrial water management with the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) announcing a ₹27-crore project to supply 4 million litres per day (MLD) of ultra-pure treated water to the Peenya Industrial Area. The initiative, which involves tertiary treatment and a dual-piping system, aims to separate non-potable industrial water from drinking water, addressing both resource efficiency and urban sustainability challenges.

The treated water will be sourced from the Nagasandra Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), where an additional tertiary treatment stage will elevate water quality beyond National Green Tribunal standards. BWSSB officials describe the water as “ultra-pure,” optimised for industrial applications where high-quality water enhances operational efficiency and longevity of equipment. The tertiary treatment plant will be developed under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, leveraging private sector expertise to expedite implementation.BWSSB has previously trialled tertiary treatment on a smaller scale, operating a 70 KLD pilot facility at Kadubeesanahalli STP. Insights from the pilot will inform the Nagasandra facility, which is expected to be operational within three to four months of partner selection. The infrastructure investment includes a 27-km pipeline from Nagasandra to Peenya, a 5-lakh-litre overhead tank, and a sump-cum-pump house to ensure consistent supply and pressure.

A defining feature of the project is Bengaluru’s first dual piping network for industrial water. This approach prevents cross-contamination between non-potable water used by industries and the potable water supply for residents. Urban planners note that dual systems not only promote resource conservation but also help industrial clusters reduce reliance on fresh water sources, particularly critical given Bengaluru’s ongoing pressure on Cauvery river allocations.“Cauvery for homes, ultra-pure treated water for industries,” said a senior BWSSB official, summarising the strategic vision. Experts highlight that such projects demonstrate the potential of integrating circular water management principles into city planning, where wastewater is treated and reused efficiently, reducing environmental strain and enhancing resilience in rapidly urbanising industrial zones.

The initiative may also serve as a model for other industrial clusters in Bengaluru, aligning with broader goals of sustainable infrastructure, climate-resilient urban systems, and responsible real estate development. Analysts emphasise that industrial water solutions of this kind can significantly improve operational sustainability, decrease municipal freshwater demand, and encourage private players to participate in long-term urban resource management.

As the project progresses, successful execution could position Bengaluru as a benchmark for integrated industrial water systems in Indian cities, highlighting the role of innovative infrastructure planning in driving equitable, resource-efficient urban growth.
