Ahmedabad has marked a significant development in the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project with the successful launch of its 11th steel bridge, spanning 70 metres over the Cadilla flyover. The new structure, part of India’s ambitious high-speed rail corridor, reflects continued progress in building one of the nation’s most advanced rail networks.

Weighing 670 metric tons, the bridge stands 13 metres tall and 14.1 metres wide, running parallel to the existing Ahmedabad–Mumbai railway tracks. Fabricated at a specialised workshop in Navsari, the steel structure was transported to the site using heavy-duty trailers and assembled on engineered steel staging set 16.5 metres above ground. The construction involved nearly 29,300 high-strength Tor-Shear bolts, while a C5 protective coating ensures long-term durability against environmental stress. An official involved in the project highlighted the operational complexity of the launch. “Executing such a large-scale assembly adjacent to active railway lines and a major flyover demands precise coordination and strict adherence to safety protocols. This bridge demonstrates our capability to advance high-speed rail infrastructure without disrupting existing transport systems,” the official said.

The MAHSR corridor plans a total of 28 steel bridges, with 17 in Gujarat and 11 in Maharashtra. The latest launch sustains momentum toward completing the corridor, which is expected to drastically reduce travel times between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, while enabling sustainable urban connectivity. Industry experts note that the integration of such robust steel structures is critical for high-speed rail operations, ensuring structural stability and long-term safety. Project engineers emphasised that these developments are not only about speed and efficiency but also sustainability. The steel fabrication and assembly processes incorporate energy-efficient methods, minimising carbon footprint and resource wastage. The bridges are designed to complement the region’s urban infrastructure while supporting seamless rail travel, reinforcing India’s commitment to sustainable mobility solutions.

As the MAHSR corridor continues construction, upcoming milestones include additional bridge launches, tunnel completions, and station infrastructure development. Once operational, the high-speed rail is expected to transform regional commuting patterns, enhance economic activity along the corridor, and demonstrate the integration of modern engineering with urban planning principles.
