Pune To Add 2,000 New Vehicles To Strengthen 24×7 Waste Management Fleet

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to add 2,000 new high-performance vehicles to its existing fleet of 944. The expansion, part of the city’s Vishwas 2025 initiative, aims to strengthen round-the-clock waste collection and improve service efficiency across Pune’s growing urban sprawl.

The Vishwas 2025 initiative—launched on 1 September—seeks to overhaul Pune’s solid waste system through mechanisation and data-driven management. The plan builds on a successful pilot in Viman Nagar, where automated waste handling reduced street spillage, improved cleanliness, and eased workloads for sanitation workers. According to officials, the forthcoming fleet will comprise durable and high-capacity vehicles capable of operating in both dense inner-city zones and peripheral neighbourhoods. “The expansion is designed not just to increase numbers, but to build a resilient, efficient, and sustainable citywide system,” an official said, adding that the new vehicles would allow the corporation to reduce downtime and operational inefficiencies.

Currently, PMC operates a mixed public–private waste collection model. Of the 944 vehicles in use, 626 are owned by the corporation and 318 are operated by private contractors. The municipal fleet includes mini trucks, dumpers, compactors, and tractors, while contractor fleets consist of dost vehicles, bin lifters, and compactors designed to navigate narrow lanes. However, rapid urbanisation, coupled with ageing vehicles, has strained the city’s waste collection infrastructure. Officials say the new mechanised fleet will significantly enhance operational capacity and resilience. The expansion is also expected to reduce carbon emissions through more fuel-efficient vehicles and streamlined collection routes.

Urban experts note that the Vishwas 2025 model represents a step toward a circular waste economy—where technology and sustainability converge to create cleaner, healthier neighbourhoods. “Mechanised waste systems not only reduce manual dependency but also promote equitable and efficient city management,” said an urban infrastructure analyst. With over 2,000 tonnes of solid waste generated daily in Pune, the initiative underscores a critical shift toward cleaner, technology-driven urban governance. Once the new fleet is deployed, PMC aims to achieve full coverage of waste collection in all 15 wards, paving the way for a zero-waste and climate-resilient city vision.
