The Thane Traffic Police have announced a 20-day traffic diversion along the Kalyan–Shilphata Road to facilitate ongoing construction work for Metro Line 12, the crucial corridor connecting Kalyan and Taloja under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The diversion, effective from 10 November to 30 November 2025, is aimed at ensuring commuter safety while allowing the smooth progress of the elevated metro infrastructure.
According to the police notification, the diversion has been necessitated to carry out girder installation between Metro pillars 117 and 189. Vehicle entry from Kalyan Phata towards Kalyan via Sonarpada Chowk and Manpada Chowk will remain closed near Metro Pillar No. 201 for the duration of the work. Similarly, movement from Kalyan Shil Road towards Kalyan via Metro Pillar No. 144 will also face temporary restrictions. To ease congestion, motorists have been advised to use alternate routes through Mumbra bypass and nearby connector roads. The diversion will remain in force from 10 am to 3:45 am daily, allowing overnight construction work to proceed efficiently. Essential services such as ambulances, fire brigades, and police vehicles are exempt from the restrictions.
A senior official from Thane Traffic Department urged residents to plan their travel in advance and adhere to diversion signs to avoid delays. “This short-term inconvenience will ensure long-term benefits for all road users once Metro Line 12 becomes operational,” the official said. The MMRDA’s Metro Line 12 project forms a vital link in the region’s mobility network, connecting Kalyan, Dombivli, and Taloja with direct metro access. When completed, the corridor is expected to significantly reduce road traffic, improve public transport connectivity, and lower vehicular emissions by shifting commuters towards mass transit.
Experts in urban mobility note that such temporary traffic disruptions are unavoidable during large-scale infrastructure upgrades. However, coordinated management, effective communication, and real-time updates can help minimise inconvenience. The Thane Traffic Police have assured that adequate personnel will be stationed along diversion routes to guide motorists and maintain order. Metro Line 12 is among several ongoing MMRDA projects designed to create a sustainable, multimodal transport system across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. By expanding metro connectivity into suburban zones, the initiative supports a greener and more inclusive urban future — one that prioritises accessibility and reduces the region’s carbon footprint.
