The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has successfully completed 100 percent of its cleanliness targets under the ongoing Special Campaign 5.0, covering a total of 15,004 sites nationwide. This initiative, designed to enhance sanitation and operational efficiency across India’s highways, marks a significant step towards more sustainable, eco-conscious, and citizen-friendly road infrastructure.
The campaign encompasses a wide array of sites, including MoRTH offices, construction camps, National Highway stretches, toll plazas, wayside amenities, roadside dhabas, and bus stops. Beyond infrastructure cleaning, the Ministry has also resolved 22 percent of pending Member of Parliament references, 68 percent of public grievances, and 38 percent of grievance appeals, indicating strong progress in administrative accountability and public engagement. Officials leading the campaign emphasised the importance of active monitoring and direct oversight. Senior officers have been deployed to conduct inspections across regional offices, National Highway stretches, toll plazas, and related amenities. Regular reviews of progress, combined with strategic follow-ups on pending matters, have ensured that operational efficiency and quality standards are maintained.
In addition to physical interventions, MoRTH has leveraged digital platforms to reach wider audiences. Campaign activities and updates have been shared on social media platforms, including X, Instagram, and Facebook, encouraging citizen participation and fostering greater transparency. This approach not only promotes civic engagement but also aligns with broader objectives of building equitable and accessible infrastructure for all road users. Experts note that achieving 100 percent coverage across more than 15,000 sites is a complex operational feat, reflecting careful planning, resource allocation, and adherence to sustainability protocols. They highlight that such initiatives, when consistently implemented, can significantly reduce pollution, improve public health, and ensure that highways remain safe and hygienic for commuters.
While the campaign has made remarkable strides, officials stress the need for ongoing maintenance and monitoring. “Sustainability is not a one-time target but a continuous effort,” an expert official stated. Ensuring that cleanliness standards are maintained will be key to maximising the benefits of this campaign for both citizens and the environment. The campaign also underscores MoRTH’s commitment to eco-friendly practices, citizen-driven oversight, and gender-sensitive operational environments, particularly in wayside amenities. With a combination of administrative diligence, technological integration, and public participation, the Special Campaign 5.0 exemplifies how government initiatives can advance both operational efficiency and sustainable urban development.
