Mumbai’s long-awaited Metro Line 2B, forming a crucial link in the city’s expanding metro network, is approaching a key operational milestone. The Mandale to Diamond Garden section, spanning 5.3 km, is expected to open by December, enhancing connectivity across the eastern suburbs of Chembur, Govandi, and Mankhurd. This phase will integrate seamlessly with the operational Line 2A corridor, creating a continuous metro link from Dahisar to DN Nagar.
Officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) confirmed that trial runs are underway on the Mandale–Diamond Garden stretch. The phased opening strategy is designed to expedite benefits to commuters while ensuring safety and system stability. The next segment, extending from DN Nagar to Saraswat Nagar in Khar, is projected to commence service by next summer, completing the connection with Line 2A and covering key stations including ESIC Nagar, Prem Nagar, Indira Nagar, Nanavati Hospital, Khira Nagar, and Saraswat Nagar. Despite operational approvals from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), central sections traversing Bandra West, BKC, Kurla, and Chembur remain under construction, with timelines yet to be finalised. MMRDA officials emphasised that rigorous system checks are being conducted to guarantee reliable and safe metro operations before public rollout.
The ₹10,986-crore Metro Line 2 project has faced repeated delays since its inception, originally slated for completion in October 2022. Challenges ranged from contractor inefficiencies to the relocation of power transmission lines and bureaucratic hurdles. Notably, the BKC–MTNL to Diamond Garden segment faced significant setbacks, with the contractor appointed only in March 2022, nearly two years behind schedule. With the phased inauguration planned for 2025, MMRDA expects Metro Line 2B to alleviate traffic pressure across Mumbai’s eastern suburbs and provide a sustainable, eco-friendly alternative for thousands of daily commuters. The project aligns with the city’s broader vision of promoting low-carbon urban mobility while improving accessibility across critical residential and commercial hubs.
As Mumbai continues its metro expansion, the Line 2B opening marks a significant step towards a more integrated, gender-neutral, and equitable public transport system that supports both daily commuters and the city’s long-term sustainable development goals.
