Mumbai Records Mild Temperatures With Rainfall Expected Today As AQI Stays Moderate

Mumbai woke up to a mild morning on Friday with intermittent showers expected to dominate the day, offering some respite from rising pollution levels. Temperatures are set to range between 26°C and 28.6°C, with high humidity and moderate winds sweeping through the city. Officials confirmed that the Air Quality Index (AQI) registered 53 on Thursday, placing it in the ‘moderate’ category. With widespread rainfall forecast in the coming days, experts believe the city’s air conditions will continue to improve.

Meteorological data shows a 90 per cent chance of precipitation during the afternoon hours, accompanied by partly cloudy skies at sunrise and overcast conditions by evening. Sunset is expected at 6:31 PM, closing out a day marked by damp but manageable weather for the city’s commuters. Pollution levels measured yesterday revealed PM2.5 concentrations at 18 µg/m³ and PM10 at 52 µg/m³, both within acceptable limits but still enough to trouble residents with respiratory sensitivities. Carbon monoxide was recorded at 398 µg/m³, largely attributed to heavy vehicular traffic across the city’s arterial roads. While these numbers are not alarming, health experts advise caution for sensitive groups, especially during peak hours of congestion.

Environmental specialists highlight that the showers are likely to bring further relief by washing away airborne pollutants. Rain plays a crucial role in temporarily reducing particulate matter, providing cleaner air even in highly urbanised environments like Mumbai. With humidity levels reaching 76 per cent and wind speeds nearing 14 km/h, conditions remain favourable for dispersing trapped pollutants. The upcoming weather outlook indicates intensifying rainfall across Mumbai. Forecasts for September 27 suggest steady moderate rain with temperatures hovering around 26.6°C to 28.7°C. On September 28, the city is expected to experience heavy showers, pulling down daytime temperatures to as low as 23.8°C. Continuous downpours are predicted through September 29 before easing to moderate rain on September 30 and October 1. By October 2, lighter showers could provide a brief respite.

Civic officials urge residents to adapt their schedules to the weather pattern. Early mornings remain the most suitable time for outdoor activities before the afternoon downpours begin. Carrying umbrellas is essential, while masks are advisable in high-traffic zones where pollution tends to spike despite rainfall. The present AQI levels reflect a notable improvement compared with the past week’s readings, reinforcing the role of monsoon showers in mitigating urban air quality concerns. For a city striving towards sustainable living and greener urban practices, the immediate gains of cleaner air offer both relief and a reminder of the pressing need for long-term climate resilience.
