Mumbai Air India Expands Domestic And International Network From NMIA
Air India Group is set to commence operations from Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) as the Adani Airport Holdings-owned facility opens its initial phase on 30 September. The move marks a strategic expansion of the airline’s domestic and international network, supporting India’s ambition to become the world’s third-largest air passenger market by 2030.
The airline’s low-cost arm, Air India Express, will be among the first operators at NMIA, initially running 20 daily flights covering 15 destinations across India. These operations, accounting for 40 aircraft movements, are planned to scale up to 55 daily departures, including five international services, by Winter 2026. Future projections include 60 daily departures to serve an expanded domestic and international network, positioning NMIA as a critical aviation hub in western India.
Experts note that the NMIA launch aligns with the government and industry strategy to develop twin-airport cities, enhancing Mumbai’s global connectivity and reducing pressure on the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. By integrating cutting-edge operational technology and sustainable design, the airport aims to deliver efficient, eco-friendly transit experiences while supporting long-term urban mobility objectives.Officials from Air India emphasised that NMIA’s strategic location makes it ideal for both passenger and cargo operations, offering seamless transit between western India and international destinations. By leveraging this connectivity, Air India Group seeks to strengthen India’s position as a global aviation hub while fostering regional economic growth.
The airport’s first phase is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually, with the full five-phase development projected to accommodate up to 90 million passengers per year. Airline and airport authorities have highlighted that the partnership is intended to create a benchmark for operational efficiency, passenger experience, and sustainable aviation practices.Analysts suggest that the NMIA opening will enhance the competitive landscape in Indian aviation, providing more options for travellers while promoting low-carbon and technologically advanced infrastructure. The development also underscores the broader trend of expanding regional hubs to support equitable access to air travel and reduce congestion in primary metropolitan airports. As operations commence, NMIA and Air India Group are expected to redefine connectivity for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, enabling faster domestic and international travel, increasing cargo throughput, and strengthening India’s global aviation
