Mumbai Weather Brings Moderate Rain With High Humidity As AQI Stays Moderate

Mumbai continued to remain under a spell of monsoon rains on Tuesday, with residents waking up to damp streets, sticky humidity, and overcast skies. The weather forecast pointed to moderate rainfall with temperatures ranging between 26°C and 28.7°C, while the city’s air quality index settled at 60, categorised as moderate. For office-goers and households alike, the combination of high humidity at 81% and wet conditions defined yet another day of monsoon-driven routines.

The day began with overnight showers, offering temporary relief from the late August heat but also creating waterlogged patches across low-lying areas. Weather officials confirmed that the maximum temperature would likely remain at 28.7°C, with wind speeds of 23.4 km/h giving intermittent comfort amid the muggy climate. With a 99% chance of precipitation forecast through the day, residents were advised to keep umbrellas and waterproofs within easy reach. Air quality has held steady despite the heavy moisture. Data showed PM2.5 levels at 22 µg/m³ and PM10 levels at 60 µg/m³, both falling within the moderate range. Experts noted that rainfall tends to flush out suspended pollutants, but the prevailing humidity also traps certain particulate matter close to the ground. Encouragingly, carbon monoxide levels dropped from 512 µg/m³ recorded late last week to 372 µg/m³, contributing to the relatively manageable AQI reading.

Officials advised commuters to remain cautious in high-traffic areas where vehicular emissions concentrate. Masks were recommended not only as a safeguard against pollutants but also as a practical measure against viral infections that thrive during the monsoon season. Transport authorities highlighted that steady rains often lead to traffic snarls and urged residents to plan travel with extra time in hand. The extended forecast indicates that Mumbai will remain under wet conditions well into the week. September 3 is likely to see another round of moderate rainfall, followed by patchy showers on September 4, when temperatures may dip slightly. Experts believe this mid-week interval may provide the best opportunity for outdoor activities. By September 5, rainfall intensity is expected to increase, pushing daytime highs down to around 26.8°C. The following weekend could bring moderate to heavy showers across the city.

September 8 is projected to provide some respite, with lighter rain and temperatures inching upwards to 29.3°C. However, meteorologists caution that the broader pattern remains consistent with an active monsoon phase. For a city as dependent on the rains for water supply yet equally vulnerable to flooding, the balancing act continues—highlighting the pressing need for sustainable urban planning, resilient drainage systems, and green mobility solutions to reduce congestion during prolonged wet spells. As Mumbai pushes through another rainy week, the city’s ability to adapt to climate-linked challenges remains central to building a sustainable, equitable, and liveable future.
