Mumbai Metro Line 6 Awards Rs 2165 Crore Contract to NCC

Mumbai Metro’s expansion is set to accelerate as NCC Ltd has been awarded a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) worth ₹2,165 crore by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for Package 1-CA-232 of Line 6, spanning 15.31 km between Swami Samarth Nagar and Vikhroli (EEH). The contract encompasses critical systems installation, signalling, rolling stock, and station infrastructure, signalling a major step toward operational readiness for the city’s rapidly growing metro network.

The MMRDA had initiated the bidding process for this package in 2024, with a completion timeline of 1,800 days. Three companies submitted technical bids, of which one was disqualified during evaluation. Subsequently, financial bids were opened in March 2025, and NCC emerged as the lowest bidder, outperforming Larsen & Toubro Ltd, whose bid stood at ₹2,515 crore. Officials confirmed that NCC received the LoA immediately following the financial evaluation. Under the contract, NCC is tasked with commissioning multiple core systems along Line 6, including the power supply and traction system, electrical and mechanical infrastructure, and the installation of lifts and escalators across 13 elevated stations. Package 1-CA-232 also involves the design, supply, installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of rolling stock, communication-based train control, telecommunication systems, platform screen doors, and depot machinery. The contract includes comprehensive maintenance for five years after the two-year defect liability period.

For the rolling stock segment, NCC has subcontracted the work to Titagarh, which has received an LoA worth ₹1,598.55 crore for executing the trains’ manufacturing, supply, and commissioning. This strategic collaboration allows specialised firms to handle critical components while ensuring streamlined project execution within timelines. Urban transport experts highlight that Line 6, which connects key residential and commercial areas, will significantly ease commuter flow across eastern and central Mumbai, enhancing connectivity to essential urban hubs. By integrating sustainable metro systems and energy-efficient infrastructure, this expansion is expected to reduce vehicular congestion and the city’s overall carbon footprint.

Officials emphasised that the deployment of advanced signalling, train control, and station facilities aligns with Mumbai Metro’s broader objective of providing safe, gender-neutral, and eco-friendly transit solutions. The completion of Line 6 is projected to improve daily travel efficiency, particularly for commuters navigating the city’s busiest corridors. This development also complements ongoing projects along Mumbai Metro Line 6, including the recent awarding of Package CA-233 to another contractor, indicating systematic progress toward a fully connected, sustainable urban transit network.
