Nagpur is poised for a significant transformation of its railway infrastructure with the anticipated completion of the Nagpur and Ajni station modernisation projects by the end of 2026. This comprehensive overhaul, a cornerstone of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, is valued at nearly ₹848 crore and aims to create world-class, sustainable, and inclusive transit hubs. By integrating modern amenities with strategic urban planning, this initiative is set to redefine the commuter experience and reinforce the city’s commitment to a zero-net-carbon future.
The flagship modernisation of Nagpur Railway Station, a vital hub in Central Railway’s network, is being executed by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) at an expenditure of ₹488 crore. A major highlight of the project is the meticulous restoration of the station’s iconic heritage building, originally constructed in 1925. This effort will preserve a century of history while seamlessly integrating it with modern upgrades, creating a powerful emotional link between the city’s past and its forward-looking future. The redeveloped station is designed to handle over one lakh passengers daily, a substantial increase from its current average footfall of 68,000, ensuring it can sustainably serve the city’s growing population. The revitalised station will also showcase Nagpur’s cultural heritage through artistic murals, upgraded digital signage, and aesthetically designed interiors, creating a vibrant and engaging environment for all travellers.
In a strategic move to enhance operational synergies and decongest the primary hub, the railways are also undertaking the significant modernisation of Ajni Railway Station. Located just three kilometres from Nagpur, this project carries an investment of ₹359.82 crore. The development of Ajni as a secondary station is a crucial element of a sustainable transport strategy, as it will divert some of the 283 daily trains from the main terminal. This will not only ease the burden on Nagpur station but also provide a more comfortable experience for the 40,000 daily passengers it is being designed to accommodate. The new Ajni station will be equipped with modern conveniences such as lifts, escalators, travelators, and spacious waiting halls, creating a more accessible and equitable travel environment.
The focus on an inclusive environment is particularly evident in the infrastructure planned for both stations, which includes advanced security surveillance, wayfinding signage, and dedicated facilities for Divyangjan. This commitment to accessibility and safety is vital for building a gender-neutral and equitable city, making public transport a reliable and dignified choice for every citizen. The massive investment in railway infrastructure is a testament to the government’s mandate to foster robust, eco-friendly public transport systems that are essential for the long-term sustainable growth of urban centres like Nagpur. The completion of these projects promises to transform not just a railway station but the entire fabric of the city’s travel experience.
