Mumbai’s much-awaited Coastal Road promenade is poised to partially open to the public by August 15, delivering the city one of its most expansive and thoughtfully designed public spaces to date. Spanning 7.5 kilometres along the western shoreline, the promenade promises to significantly transform the city’s relationship with its coast—introducing dedicated pedestrian and cycling access, recreational infrastructure, and inclusive design in a single integrated corridor.
Officials confirmed that around 5.25 kilometres of the promenade, extending between Priyadarshini Park and Haji Ali, and from Baroda Palace to Worli, will be accessible to the public as part of the initial launch. The project falls within the broader ₹13,984-crore Mumbai Coastal Road development, which includes a 10.58-kilometre, eight-lane expressway connecting Marine Drive to Worli. Envisioned as a people-centric urban intervention, the promenade is more than double the length of the iconic Marine Drive stretch and is designed to offer a seamless experience for walkers, joggers, and cyclists alike. Officials from the civic body have confirmed that speed camera tests have been completed, and all security and safety infrastructure has been reviewed to accommodate public access.
Initial access points will be facilitated via underpasses located near Tata Garden, Haji Ali Juice Centre, Mahalaxmi Temple, and three locations in Worli. The underpasses have been constructed to ensure pedestrian safety and are equipped with ramps to support differently abled access. Equipped with amenities such as benches, drinking water stations, bio-toilets, cycle stands, and dedicated green landscaping, the new public space aims to promote a healthier and more sustainable urban lifestyle. As part of long-term planning, the promenade also includes 19 pedestrian underpasses, four of which will be operational from day one, along with a continuous cycling track.
Authorities have approached the city transport undertaking to introduce bus services along the corridor. Four new bus bays and a terminal near Worli Dairy have been built to handle the expected increase in footfall. Meanwhile, two newly developed underground parking zones on Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road are set to provide pay-and-park services for private vehicle users. In anticipation of the high number of visitors, a comprehensive security and surveillance plan is being implemented, with support from city police, coastal security agencies, and disaster management personnel. Cleanliness, accessibility, and order will be overseen by local ward officers, who have deployed clean-up marshals and implemented strict no-hawking zones.
To ensure long-term sustainability, landscaping and maintenance responsibilities have been assigned to a leading volunteer organisation, with interim upkeep handled by the city’s horticulture department. Warning signage and seawall protection measures are in place to safeguard public movement along the shoreline. As Mumbai continues its transition towards smarter and more inclusive urban planning, the opening of this public promenade signals a major shift. Designed for people, driven by sustainability, and deeply rooted in the city’s evolving infrastructure narrative, the Mumbai Coastal Road promenade could well become the city’s next landmark for equitable and eco-conscious public life.
