The long-anticipated integration of Chennai’s Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) with Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is finally moving towards fruition, with the Railway Board granting in-principle approval to the merger proposal. This pivotal development signals a significant step towards a unified urban rail system, promising enhanced connectivity and a more seamless commute for thousands of daily passengers. The integration is crucial for fostering a sustainable and efficiently managed urban transport network, aligning with the city’s aspirations for eco-friendly and equitable mobility.

A dedicated special team comprising officials from Indian Railways and the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) has been diligently outlining the broader structure of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to address these complexities.
