Vijayawada Gets Six‑Lane NH65 Upgrade Over 226 Km With DPR by August

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has confirmed a significant expansion of the six-laning project for NH-65 along the crucial Vijayawada–Hyderabad corridor. This revised plan will now extend the upgrade up to the Vijayawada West Bypass near Gollapudi, encompassing a total stretch of 226 kilometres. This pivotal infrastructure development, which moves beyond its initially proposed scope, promises to dramatically reduce travel time between the twin capitals of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, fostering enhanced economic integration and more sustainable regional mobility.

The decision to extend the six-laning, confirmed by the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, represents a crucial response to stakeholder demands. While earlier plans aimed to limit the project to 198 kilometres, concluding at the Amaravati Outer Ring Road (ORR) alignment, a recent stakeholder meeting underscored the imperative for a more comprehensive upgrade. This responsiveness to local needs highlights a collaborative approach to infrastructure development, ensuring that projects truly serve the communities they connect and the broader economic corridors.

The expanded six-laning will now span from kilometre 40 near the Hyderabad Regional Ring Road to kilometre 266 at the Vijayawada West Bypass. This extended reach is anticipated to create a more seamless and efficient travel experience, eliminating potential bottlenecks at the previously planned termination point. By providing a wider and smoother thoroughfare, the project is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, which in turn leads to a decrease in vehicular emissions and improved air quality along this busy inter-state route, aligning with eco-friendly urban development goals.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this extended stretch is currently being prepared by the appointed consultant and is expected to be finalised by the end of August. Upon its receipt, the DPR will undergo necessary approvals at the NHAI’s central office in Delhi, following which tenders will be floated for the widening works. This systematic progression ensures that all technical and administrative prerequisites are met before the commencement of physical construction, paving the way for a timely and efficient execution of the project.

The upgrade of NH-65 holds immense economic and social significance for both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Reduced travel times will facilitate faster movement of goods and services, directly lowering logistics costs for businesses and enhancing trade efficiency between these two economically vibrant states. This improved connectivity is vital for fostering regional growth, attracting investments, and creating new opportunities across various sectors, thereby contributing to the overall economic prosperity of the region.

Furthermore, a multi-lane highway with improved design standards inherently enhances road safety. By separating traffic flows and providing ample space for vehicles, the risk of accidents is significantly reduced, benefiting all road users. This commitment to safer and more efficient transportation infrastructure contributes to the development of more equitable cities, ensuring that travel is not only faster but also more secure for everyone, irrespective of their gender or socio-economic background, fostering a more inclusive and accessible urban environment.
