Bihar NHAI Advances Rs 3000 Crore Muzaffarpur Barauni Highway Project

Bihar, the national highways authority has commenced the development of a 102-kilometer four-lane highway connecting Muzaffarpur and Barauni, with an estimated investment of Rs 3,000 crore. This pivotal infrastructure project aims to significantly alleviate heavy traffic congestion on the existing two-lane National Highway-28, promising vastly improved regional connectivity and reduced travel times across the state. Officials confirm that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been finalized, with the tender process anticipated to begin next month, marking a crucial step towards modernizing the state’s transport network and boosting economic activity.

The ambitious upgrade of this vital corridor is set to transform travel between these two key regions. The project encompasses the construction of two major bridges, 16 smaller bridges, and 16 underpasses, designed to enhance local accessibility and ensure smoother traffic flow. Notably, the Ramdayalu bridge in Muzaffarpur is also slated for expansion to four lanes as an integral part of this comprehensive initiative. Officials are currently reviewing historical survey documents, dating back to 1962, originally used for the construction of the Muzaffarpur-Samastipur NH-28. This review is essential for assessing the precise extent of land acquisition required for the new four-lane alignment, although much of the proposed route is already bordered by government-owned land, potentially streamlining the acquisition process for efficient project execution and timely delivery.

This highway development is part of a broader, concerted effort by the state and central governments to bolster road infrastructure across Bihar, fostering improved logistics and economic growth. A separate four-lane stretch is already under active development between Barauni and Begusarai, indicating a strategic, interconnected approach to regional connectivity. During a recent visit as part of a district-level review, the state’s leadership personally inspected the Muzaffarpur-Barauni route. Following this review, clear directives were issued to expedite construction work, emphasizing the project’s critical importance for regional development and citizen convenience. The improved road network is expected not only to reduce travel time significantly but also to enhance road safety, stimulate local economies by facilitating trade and commerce, and improve access to industrial and commercial centers in Muzaffarpur and Barauni.

The Muzaffarpur-Barauni highway project signifies a major infrastructure push for Bihar, promising enhanced connectivity and economic growth. With its four-lane expansion and ancillary structures, it will significantly ease traffic, reduce travel times, and align with the state’s vision for modern transport networks. This initiative highlights a strong commitment to regional development.
