The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has expressed strong confidence in India’s aviation safety and infrastructure readiness, highlighting the nation’s robust operational standards and commitment to enhancing air travel experiences.
Nick Careen, IATA’s Senior Vice President for Operations, Safety, and Security, affirmed that the Indian aviation sector has not encountered significant concerns regarding operational safety or infrastructure preparedness. He emphasized that with appropriate leadership and involvement, positive outcomes are achievable. Careen’s remarks come in the wake of a recent incident involving IndiGo flight 6E 2142, which encountered a severe hailstorm during its journey from Delhi to Srinagar. The aircraft sustained visible damage to its nose but managed to land safely with all 227 passengers and crew unharmed. Careen noted that such incidents offer valuable learning opportunities, particularly in areas like coordination and emergency response protocols.
Addressing concerns about regional airspace restrictions, Careen stated that airspace should remain neutral and not be utilized as a tool in geopolitical disputes. He acknowledged the challenges posed by closed airspaces but expressed confidence in the industry’s ability to adapt and ensure safe and efficient operations. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has reaffirmed India’s retention of the Category 1 status under the International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA), indicating that Indian carriers meet global safety oversight standards.
Furthermore, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has initiated an audit of India’s aviation security readiness, focusing on compliance with global security standards and operational procedures.
