Ship Repair Complex in Visakhapatnam Nears Full Capacity

Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in Visakhapatnam is experiencing a significant transformation, with its Ship Repair Complex (SRC) operating at near-full capacity due to an influx of repair orders from both defence and commercial sectors.

Once a relatively quiet section of the shipyard, the SRC has become a bustling hub, handling a diverse array of vessels including offshore patrol ships, supply vessels, and fishing boats. Currently, four vessels are undergoing repairs at the complex: a Coast Guard offshore patrol vessel, a Shipping Corporation of India offshore supply ship, and two fishing vessels. Looking ahead, the repair docket is equally packed, with four additional ships scheduled for dry-docking in the coming months. This includes a naval Sandhayak-class survey vessel, an oceanographic research vessel, a fisheries vessel, and a scientific research vessel. This surge in activity marks a remarkable turnaround for a section of the yard that previously experienced extended periods of inactivity.

The revitalisation of the SRC is attributed to HSL’s renewed focus on timely delivery, quality workmanship, and transparent client engagement. Ship owners who have experienced the yard’s performance are now proactively scheduling their vessels for repairs, contributing to the increased demand. However, this heightened activity has led to berthing constraints, prompting HSL to collaborate with the Visakhapatnam Port Authority to secure alternate docking spaces to accommodate the growing influx of vessels. As HSL approaches its 85th anniversary on June 21, the resurgence of the SRC adds a significant chapter to the shipyard’s legacy. The complex’s transformation underscores the potential of focused reform and process discipline in revitalising critical national infrastructure. The increased activity not only enhances HSL’s capabilities but also contributes to the local economy, providing employment opportunities and supporting the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the region.

Looking forward, HSL aims to further expand its operations, positioning Visakhapatnam as a prominent hub for shipbuilding and repair on the eastern seaboard. With ongoing infrastructure upgrades and a commitment to innovation, HSL is poised to meet the evolving demands of the maritime industry, reinforcing its role as a key player in India’s maritime sector.
