Ahmedabad Airport Adopts Smart Irrigation Technology to Save Water

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) in Ahmedabad has introduced a state-of-the-art cloud-based irrigation system across its 17-acre horticulture area.

This innovative technology leverages real-time weather data and sensor inputs to optimise water usage, ensuring that each plant receives the precise amount of water needed. The system’s efficiency has led to a significant reduction in water consumption, saving approximately 17,850 kilolitres of water annually—enough to meet the daily needs of a small city. This advancement aligns with the airport’s broader sustainability goals, which include energy-efficient lighting, waste reduction programmes, and a commitment to zero net carbon emissions.

Managed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Ltd, SVPIA’s adoption of this smart irrigation system underscores its dedication to environmental stewardship. The airport’s efforts have been recognised with the prestigious Environmental Excellence Award at the 23rd Annual Greentech Environment Awards 2023, highlighting its leadership in sustainable airport operations. As passenger traffic continues to grow, with over 13.4 million passengers recorded in the 2024-25 financial year, SVPIA remains committed to integrating cutting-edge technologies that promote sustainability and enhance the passenger experience.
