COVID 19 Active Cases Cross 1000 in India Kerala Reports Highest Spike

India’s active COVID-19 caseload crossed the 1,000 mark on Monday, with 752 new cases reported across the country, according to data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The latest update puts the total number of active infections at 1,009, highlighting a noticeable uptick in cases, especially in a few southern states. Kerala has emerged as the worst-hit state, registering 430 active cases — the highest in the country. Maharashtra follows with 209 cases, while Delhi has 104. Gujarat and Karnataka reported 83 and 47 active cases respectively, reflecting a wider geographical spread of the infections. In a concerning incident, a 21-year-old patient undergoing treatment at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Kalwa Hospital in Thane, Maharashtra, succumbed to the virus. The patient, a resident of Mumbra, had been admitted on May 22 after testing positive for COVID-19, the Thane Municipal Corporation confirmed.

Amid the rise in numbers, Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava conducted a high-level review with state officials over the weekend. The meeting focused on COVID-19 activity in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, official sources said. Health authorities clarified that the majority of new cases remain mild and do not require hospitalisation. Most patients are under home isolation, with symptoms being monitored as part of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) protocols. Despite the overall manageable situation, the Union Health Ministry reiterated the importance of precautionary measures.

Citizens are encouraged to maintain hand hygiene, wear masks in crowded spaces, and avoid unnecessary gatherings. Officials emphasised that while COVID-19 is now treated like any other respiratory infection, a proactive approach remains essential to prevent fresh surges.
