Bhuj gets Rs 53400 crore boost for green growth
Bhuj is set to witness a transformative leap in infrastructure, sustainability, and clean energy as Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in Gujarat to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for development projects exceeding ₹53,400 crore.
The ambitious investment, aimed at reshaping the region’s urban and industrial landscape, marks a significant stride toward India’s carbon-neutral and equitable development goals.During his visit to Bhuj on 26 May, the Prime Minister will roll out large-scale projects across the power, transport, port, and water management sectors. Among the centrepieces of the initiative are transmission corridors designed to evacuate renewable energy from the expansive Khavda Renewable Energy Park, a key pillar of India’s clean energy transition in western India.
The Khavda park, which is projected to be one of the world’s largest renewable energy zones, will benefit from the robust transmission infrastructure, paving the way for scaled-up wind and solar integration into the national grid. This supports India’s broader mission of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030. Bhuj, through these developments, is positioning itself as a hub in the green power ecosystem.Further bolstering the region’s industrial infrastructure, a new ultra-supercritical thermal power unit at Tapi is also on the agenda. While thermal power remains part of India’s energy mix, the new plant is expected to adhere to the highest environmental standards and deliver improved efficiency with lower emissions per megawatt.
In the same visit, the Prime Minister will also dedicate key port and logistics infrastructure projects at Kandla Port. These developments are expected to improve cargo movement efficiency, strengthen trade connectivity and help reduce logistics-related emissions—critical for decarbonising India’s growing freight demand.Complementing the industrial projects are extensive urban upgrades, including solar initiatives, water security infrastructure, and road networks undertaken by the Government of Gujarat. These projects underline a growing policy shift in state-level planning towards resilient cities that prioritise resource efficiency, clean mobility, and inclusive growth.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the Dahod Electric Locomotive Manufacturing Plant, a cornerstone of India’s vision for electrified and sustainable rail freight. The plant, designed to produce 9000 HP electric locomotives, aims to power Indian Railways’ green ambitions, featuring regenerative braking systems and high-efficiency electric traction. He will also flag off the first locomotive built at the plant and launch a new Vande Bharat Express between Veraval and Ahmedabad.
The following day, in Gandhinagar, the Prime Minister will unveil ‘Urban Development Year 2025’, commemorating 20 years since Gujarat’s landmark 2005 urban transformation plan. He will inaugurate new projects in housing, health, and sanitation and release ₹3,300 crore to urban local bodies under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana, reaffirming the state’s commitment to livable, sustainable urbanisation.
As Gujarat prepares to host these mega projects, the convergence of clean energy, modern infrastructure, and inclusive housing schemes offers a blueprint for India’s green urban future. These initiatives reflect a clear political and developmental push toward equitable growth powered by sustainability-first investments.
