Dahod Railway Factory Targets 1200 New Locos

Indian Railways has launched the country’s first 9000 horsepower (HP) electric locomotive from its newly commissioned production unit in Dahod, Gujarat.

Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 26, the Dahod Loco Manufacturing Shop is set to become a critical hub for advanced, sustainable rail freight movement in the coming decade. Under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, Indian Railways plans to roll out 1200 of these high-power locomotives over the next 10 years, all bearing the ‘Manufactured in Dahod’ label. The project reflects the government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ thrust and marks a new chapter in India’s journey towards zero-carbon transportation and infrastructure self-reliance.

With a massive ₹20,000 crore investment backing this initiative, these locomotives will significantly enhance the Indian Railways’ freight handling capacity, especially on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) and other high-gradient sections. Each engine is capable of hauling up to 4600 tonnes of cargo in double-stack configurations at gradients of 1 in 200, enabling speeds of 75 kmph. This is a dramatic leap from the current average freight speed of 20–25 kmph on conventional tracks. What makes these locomotives unique is not just their unmatched power but the clear emphasis on driver welfare and environmental sustainability. For the first time in Indian railway history, engines will be equipped with air conditioning and toilets for loco pilots, marking a long-overdue shift in occupational standards. Moreover, the engines are designed with regenerative braking systems that will reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions—a critical step towards meeting India’s climate commitments.

According to Indian Railways officials, the new Dahod facility is already manufacturing four of these next-generation locomotives. The initiative also includes an export plan, aiming to position India as a manufacturing base for high-performance rail technology on the global stage. If successful, this would place India in a competitive bracket alongside European and North American locomotive exporters. This ambitious move also addresses the critical need to expand railway capacity without expanding land acquisition footprints. With existing trunk lines like NH-16 saturated, enhancing rail freight efficiency will offer a sustainable alternative to road-based logistics, especially for bulk commodities and container traffic.

The rollout of 9000 HP locomotives is expected to boost Indian Railways’ throughput, improve line capacity and contribute to national goals of economic growth through infrastructure development. While the long-term success of this project will depend on operational execution and supply chain efficiency, the foundation laid at Dahod is poised to transform India’s rail freight landscape. As India balances economic growth with ecological sensitivity, Dahod’s role in shaping a greener and more efficient rail future is both symbolic and substantial.
