Srinagar has become the strategic epicentre for a transformative initiative aimed at bolstering inland water transport (IWT) infrastructure in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), operating under the aegis of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, has inaugurated its new regional office within Transport Bhawan, Srinagar. This significant development underscores the government’s steadfast commitment to harnessing the latent potential of river-based transportation for the region’s economic and ecological advancement. The newly operational IWAI office, established with the proactive support of the Jammu and Kashmir administration, will serve as the central coordinating body for all IWT-related activities and projects within the Union Territory. This strategic establishment is a key component of a broader vision to leverage the region’s river systems as a catalyst for sustainable development, offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional modes of transport and contributing to both economic prosperity and environmental stewardship.
Further solidifying this commitment, IWAI has formalised a collaborative partnership with the government of Jammu and Kashmir through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This landmark agreement paves the way for the comprehensive development of three significant national waterways: NW-26 (River Chenab), NW-49 (River Jhelum), and NW-84 (River Ravi). This synergistic collaboration is poised to substantially enhance inland navigation infrastructure and foster seamless and sustainable connectivity across the diverse terrain of Jammu and Kashmir. Under the agreed framework of the MoU, IWAI will undertake a series of crucial development activities. These include the strategic installation of floating jetties at ten key locations identified throughout Jammu and Kashmir, providing essential infrastructure for passenger and cargo movement. Additionally, concerted efforts will be directed towards establishing reliable navigational fairways through selective and environmentally sensitive dredging practices. The deployment of night navigation aids will further enhance the safety and efficiency of vessel movement, enabling round-the-clock operation. Regular hydrographic surveys will also be conducted to ensure the continuous monitoring and maintenance of navigable channels.
This visionary project aligns seamlessly with broader national objectives aimed at promoting green transportation alternatives, alleviating the growing congestion on road networks, and significantly reducing carbon emissions associated with conventional transport. River navigation offers an inherently eco-friendly mode of transport that can contribute synergistically to both economic growth and environmental sustainability, fostering a more balanced and responsible approach to regional development This initiative is also a crucial element of the nationwide vision to strategically leverage the country’s extensive network of river systems as powerful engines of economic growth and social inclusion. By enhancing infrastructure and connectivity within Jammu and Kashmir, the project aspires to unlock a plethora of new opportunities in key sectors such as tourism, trade, and employment generation, particularly in remote and underserved areas that have historically faced connectivity challenges.
The collaborative synergy between IWAI and the Jammu and Kashmir administration is anticipated to stimulate local economies, provide a significant boost to eco-tourism initiatives, and empower residents with improved access to essential goods and services through efficient water-based logistics solutions. This partnership represents a forward-thinking stride in reimagining transportation infrastructure, aligning it with the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals and paving the way for a more prosperous and environmentally conscious future for the region. As inland waterways across the nation gain renewed focus under national development programs, the newly established Srinagar office of IWAI will play a pivotal role in facilitating the timely execution and seamless coordination of these transformative projects within the Union Territory. This initiative stands as a powerful testament to the government’s unwavering commitment to fostering inclusive growth, promoting regional development, and harnessing the sustainable potential of India’s inland waterways.
