Delhi Airport Assures Normal Operations Amid Heightened Security

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) continues to operate, offering a semblance of normalcy in an otherwise disrupted aviation landscape.

While 24 airports across northern and western India have been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure, IGIA remains open, albeit with some operational challenges. The closures, which include airports in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, have been implemented following heightened security concerns and recent military operations. The Civil Aviation Ministry cited these measures as necessary to ensure the safety and security of air travel in the region.

Despite the closures, IGIA has maintained its operations, though not without impact. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) confirmed that while the airport remains functional, some flights have been delayed or cancelled due to changes in airspace and heightened security measures. In response to the evolving situation, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has issued directives to enhance security protocols across all airports. These measures include stricter access controls, enhanced screening procedures, and a ban on visitor entry into terminal buildings. The BCAS has also mandated 100% secondary ladder point checks for all Air India flights at 161 airports, including those in Punjab.

Airlines have also adjusted their operations in light of the current security environment. Air India has advised passengers to arrive at the airport at least three hours before their scheduled departure to accommodate additional security checks. While IGIA remains operational, the broader aviation network is experiencing significant disruptions. The temporary closure of 24 airports has led to a ripple effect on flight schedules, with numerous cancellations and delays reported across the country. Travelers are advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates and to plan their journeys accordingly.

As the situation develops, authorities continue to monitor the security landscape closely, with the primary goal of ensuring the safety of passengers and aviation personnel. The resilience of Delhi’s airport operations amidst these challenges underscores the critical role of robust infrastructure and preparedness in maintaining continuity during times of crisis. For real-time updates and information, passengers are encouraged to consult official sources and stay informed through their airlines and airport authorities.
