In the wake of the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists,
the Indian Railways has initiated a special train service to facilitate the safe return of stranded travellers. Train No. 04612, departing from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra at 9:20 PM, makes scheduled stops at Udhampur and Jammu Tawi before arriving in New Delhi at 9:30 AM the following day. This measure aims to address the urgent transportation needs of those affected by the incident.The train’s configuration includes seven general class coaches, eight sleeper class coaches, two third AC coaches, one third AC economy coach, and two luggage-cum-brake vans, designed to accommodate the increased passenger load resulting from the crisis. To assist travellers, the Indian Railways has established dedicated help desks at major stations, including SMVD Katra, providing guidance and real-time information to ensure a smoother journey for those impacted.

Complementing the rail services, the aviation sector has also responded to the emergency. Air India has announced two additional flights from Srinagar: one to Delhi at 12:20 PM and another to Mumbai at 4:00 PM on April 25. The airline is offering complimentary rescheduling and full refunds on cancellations for passengers with confirmed bookings until May 7, 2025. Similarly, SpiceJet has extended waivers on rescheduling and cancellations for travel to and from Srinagar until April 30, 2025.
These coordinated efforts by the Indian Railways and airlines underscore a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens during times of crisis. By providing accessible transportation options and flexible travel policies, authorities aim to alleviate the distress faced by travellers and facilitate their safe return home.
