Food safety checks have intensified across the Secunderabad Cantonment after customers reportedly fell ill following a meal at Saptami Grand restaurant in New Bowenpally, prompting the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) to inspect hotels, eateries and tiffin centres in the area.
SCB health and sanitation officials issued a notice to Saptami Grand after the suspected food-poisoning incident. The board has since been checking food quality, hygiene and preparation practices at establishments serving residents and other customers across the Cantonment.
The inspections cover hotels, tiffin centres and other food establishments. Officials are examining the cleanliness of premises, as well as the conditions in which food is prepared, stored and served, according to an SCB official quoted by Deccan Chronicle.
A recent inspection at a tiffin centre in Balanagar included checks of idlis and other food items, the official said. The inspections are intended to identify problems in food handling and hygiene that could create health risks for consumers.
“We noticed poor hygiene in some hotels; there’s an immediate need for more consistent inspections,” the SCB official told the newspaper. The official added that food contamination and improper handling can cause illnesses, making regular checks particularly important at establishments that serve large numbers of customers.
The action places food establishments within the Cantonment under closer scrutiny following the reported illness linked to the New Bowenpally restaurant. The report does not state the number of affected customers, the specific cause of the suspected food poisoning or whether laboratory testing has confirmed contamination.
For the SCB, the inspections involve both food-related checks and broader sanitation assessments. The board’s health and sanitation officials are examining whether establishments maintain clean premises and follow safe practices while handling food. The inspections also bring attention to the role of local civic authorities in monitoring everyday public-health risks in densely used commercial areas.
The reported incident has renewed attention on the consistency of inspections across eateries in the Cantonment. While officials have begun checking establishments, the SCB official’s remarks indicate that poor hygiene was observed at some hotels and that more regular monitoring is needed.
The immediate next steps are continued inspections of hotels, tiffin centres and other food establishments across the Cantonment. The SCB’s notice to Saptami Grand and its ongoing checks will determine the board’s further response to the reported illness and any hygiene violations identified during inspections.
