Health Minister K Muraleedharan has asked the Kerala government to extend the proposed Peroorkada flyover to Kowdiar, arguing that the existing design would not resolve congestion across the full Peroorkada–Ambalamukku–Kowdiar corridor in Thiruvananthapuram.
Muraleedharan has written to Chief Minister V D Satheesan seeking changes to the project, which has received in-principle approval. The current proposal is scheduled to end before Ambalamukku junction. The minister has said the flyover should instead continue beyond the junction and terminate near the income tax office at Kowdiar.
Under the suggested redesign, the flyover would begin near the Vazhayila side of Peroorkada junction, pass beyond Ambalamukku junction and end in front of the income tax office. The proposed extension is intended to cover the wider congested stretch rather than address only the junction at Peroorkada.
The minister said traffic congestion at Peroorkada and Ambalamukku junctions was causing considerable inconvenience to the public. He argued that a comprehensive project covering the entire corridor would provide substantial relief to commuters and offer a lasting response to the bottlenecks.
Muraleedharan has urged the chief minister to direct the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board, which is implementing the project, to examine the necessary modifications and initiate urgent steps. The request places the design and scope of the already approved project under consideration before construction proceeds.
The proposed extension would alter the project’s planned alignment, length and termination point. The report does not specify whether the state government or KIIFB has accepted the redesign request, nor does it provide a revised cost, construction schedule or completion timeline. Further action will depend on the government’s response and any technical or administrative changes made to the project.
