A crime police inspector posted at Pune’s Sahakarnagar police station has been booked after allegedly arriving at the station under the influence of alcohol and creating a disruption during the early hours, prompting intervention by senior officers and a medical examination at Sassoon General Hospital.
Rajesh Khandve, who serves as police inspector (crime) at Sahakarnagar police station, arrived at the station at around 2 am, according to a report by Civic Mirror – Pune. The disruption, including shouting and loud behaviour, continued until about 2.30 am, the report said.
The incident affected the functioning of the police station and created a tense atmosphere for officers and staff present at the time. Senior police officers were informed about the situation and reached the station, where they intervened and brought the situation under control, according to the report.
A case was subsequently registered against Khandve at Sahakarnagar police station. The report said Khandve was later taken to Sassoon General Hospital, where he underwent a medical examination.
The registration of the case was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Milind Mohite, who said that the crime police inspector at Sahakarnagar police station had created a disturbance after consuming alcohol and that a case had been registered in connection with the incident. The report did not specify the sections under which the case was registered.
The incident comes two days after another reported disruption involving a police employee at the residence of Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar. Civic Mirror – Pune reported that the earlier incident had involved a police employee allegedly creating a disturbance at the commissioner’s residence.
The two incidents occurring within a short period have brought renewed attention to discipline and conduct within the Pune Police force. Police stations operate as frontline public institutions, handling complaints, investigations, emergency responses and interactions with residents. Any disruption involving an officer on duty or at a police facility can affect the functioning of the station and raise questions about accountability within the department.
According to the report, senior officers were initially reluctant to speak about the Sahakarnagar incident. The details emerged after Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar directed senior officials to provide information about the matter. The report did not state what departmental action, if any, would follow the criminal case.
The immediate police response has included senior-level intervention, registration of the case and the medical examination of the officer. Further action will depend on the investigation and any departmental proceedings initiated by the Pune Police administration.
