Tripura’s Digital Healthcare Plan Wins National Recognition

Tripura’s digital healthcare model has received national recognition after the state presented its rollout of connected patient services and paperless hospital systems at a meeting in Delhi attended by states and Union territories.

The meeting reviewed progress under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). Tripura’s presentation focused on a digital system launched two months ago at Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee Civil Hospital in Agartala, allowing patients to access services ranging from registration and consultation to prescriptions, laboratory tests and diagnostic records.

Health secretary Kiran Gitte said the Union health ministry appreciated the state’s presentation. He said Tripura had achieved full coverage for generating Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) IDs in government hospitals and was working to extend the digital services to private institutions within two months.

“The aim is to make health records and patient services more connected and accessible,” Gitte said, according to the report.

ABHA IDs are part of the ABDM framework, which seeks to support the digital linking and portability of health records. In Tripura’s government hospitals, the state says the rollout has already covered ABHA ID generation. The next planned expansion is to private healthcare institutions, although the report does not specify the number of facilities or the implementation schedule for each institution.

The state government also plans to move hospital services away from paper records. From November 10, registration, prescriptions, tests, laboratory reports and other patient services are scheduled to shift to digital platforms. The transition is expected by the state to reduce paperwork and delays, improve patient management and increase transparency.

The paperless transition is part of the health and family welfare department’s plan to introduce an Integrated Health Management Information System, or IHMIS. According to Gitte, the system is expected to strengthen administration, coordination and monitoring of patient services across the state’s healthcare network.

For patients, the change could bring several hospital processes into a single digital workflow instead of requiring separate paper-based interactions for registration, consultation, tests and reports. The reported rollout at Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee Civil Hospital provides the initial operating base for the wider plan, while the proposed extension to private institutions would broaden the number of facilities connected to the system.

The state’s announcement also places administrative coordination at the centre of the project. A digital record system requires hospitals and departments to use common processes for registering patients, recording consultations, issuing prescriptions and storing test results. The reported IHMIS plan is intended to support that coordination and allow the health department to monitor patient services more systematically.

Tripura’s recognition came as the Delhi meeting assessed the implementation of Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY and ABDM across states and Union territories. The state’s next stated milestones are the scheduled November 10 shift to digital hospital services and the planned expansion of the system to private institutions within two months.
